Get a quick preview of this year's Zoo Lights at the Memphis Zoo!
The holiday season knows no boundaries. It’s not just your neighbors that put up decorative lights; even the Memphis Zoo gets in on the photon fun.
Zoo Lights at the Memphis Zoo has been lighting up the 901 for the last 15 years, thanks to returning sponsor Sun Trust Bank. So why the need for a sponsor? Because these aren’t your dad’s Christmas lights. The Memphis Zoo has nearly 1 million bulbs in place for guests to enjoy during their winter wander. As for winter wonder, Zoo Lights also features a soft white blanketing of (faux) snow, making you feel like you’re at the North Pole itself. In fact, it’s so picturesque that it’s become a destination for engagements.
Construction on Zoo Lights is so massive they actually start all the way back in September, building staple pieces like the “Tunnel of Light” and the “Memphis on Ice” ice skating rink, where patrons can lace up and feel themselves glide through the crisp winter air. If that’s not your speed, there is a 90-foot Ferris wheel – which is, of course, covered in lights.
If you need to entertain family from out of town, occupy the kids while they’re out of school or just enjoy the city for the beauty it has to offer, the Memphis Zoo’s Zoo Lights is open 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on select nights until Dec. 30. As for finding it, don’t worry — they’ll light the way for you.
Walk through the Memphis Zoo under the shining twinkle of holiday cheer, complemented by Christmas tunes to match.
