Are you up for the Big Dipper Challenge? This feat of fast food is nothing to scoff at, and The Velvet Cream (also known as "The Dip") wants to see if you have what it takes to make it to the Wall of Fame!
About Velvet Cream
Just down the road from the Bluff City in Hernando, the Velvet Cream Ice Cream — also known as “The Dip” — has been serving up delicious burgers and shakes since 1947. In fact, according to their website, they’re the oldest, continuously-run restaurant in all of DeSoto County. If you head there right around the time that kids are getting out of school, you’ll see that it’s one of the most popular places in town for families to come and enjoy a treat.
Not only does this historic restaurant serve up good food, but you’ll probably spend more time trying to figure out what to order than you will eating your food! The Velvet Cream has one of the biggest menus you will ever set eyes on; It’s truly a one-stop-shop for anything and everything you could ever want from ANY fast food place. They offer so many different items, the list of what they DON’T have is actually shorter. Just counting the frozen treats alone — ice cream, yogurt, Italian and shaved ices, etc. — there are OVER 250 flavors to choose from. Yeah, have fun trying to figure out what you want!
The Big Dipper Challenge
This challenge is not for the faint of heart. If you’re attempting this, I highly recommend you prepare yourself for what you’re about to put yourself through! The challenge consists of devouring a delicious, 2-pound bacon burger, plus a side of chili-cheese or bacon-cheese fries, and a giant I-55 Milkshake — a whopping 60 ounces of milkshake — to wash it all down.
To break it down more, you’d need to eat: four half-pound all-beef patties, each topped with 2 pieces of your choice of cheese, plus bacon strips that are topped with two more slices of cheese. All of this is fit between your choice of bun. Plus the side chili-cheese or bacon-cheese waffle, regular, or spicy fries, and topped off with a 60-ounce milkshake. An additional fun fact: they couldn’t find a 55-ounce cup for their I-55 Milkshake, so they treat you with an extra 5 ounces!
The Big Dipper Challenge has been around for roughly a decade, and there have only been around 14 people to complete the challenge. If you want to try the challenge for yourself, it’ll cost you $40. But if you manage to complete the challenge, not only do you get your money back and a T-shirt, but you’ll also be forever enshrined in Velvet Cream history. The last person to complete the challenge was in 2016 — Will you be next on the Wall of Fame?
