Johnny Cash statue erected in Memphis
I have always heard about Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis sightings in Memphis. In my many years of loving all the music from Memphis I have rarely heard any stories of past sightings of Johnny Cash. I knew Elvis had played the Overton park shell. You just never know where history will happen. I had never heard where Johnny’s first show took place. Like Elvis, Johnny’s first show was right here in Memphis. Thankfully others had heard this story and took action. There will be a Johnny Cash statue erected outside 999 South Cooper right here in Memphis. Johnny Cash’s first performance with the Tennessee Two happened at the church that is right next door in 1954.
It was the Galloway Methodist Church where Cash performed with Marshall Grant and Luther Perkins of the Tennessee Two for the first time.
Galloway House is currently available for weddings and events. The statue, designed by local artist Mike McCarthy, will be placed on an 18- by 6-foot space and on either side there will be bricks purchased by sponsors.
Visitors who want to take selfies with Cash will be able to position themselves to get the former church in the background of their photo.
