How to make a no-sew face mask out of a blue shop towel.

So, I’m sure by now you’ve seen dozens of online tutorials for how to make your own face mask after the CDC advised over the weekend that people should be wearing them in public right now.

The CDC recommended using a cloth face covering and they even have a step by step of how to make your own on their website.

However, according to Business Insider, a small clothing manufacturer in Los Angeles found that a face mask made using a blue shop towel can filter particles two to three times better than cotton.

So if you’re interested, here is how to make a face mask using a blue shop towel and a few other household items.


  • A blue shop towel
  • Two rubber bands
  • One paper clip
  • A stapler
  • Scotch tape


  1. Un-bend the paper clip and make two small loops at each end. This part will serve as your nose piece.
  2. Place paper clip a the top of the shop towel and tape it down.
  3. Make a couple of folds over the paper clip.
  4. Then accordion fold the shop towel the rest of the way down making each fold about one inch wide.
  5. Staple each end leaving about one inch of space from the ends.
  6. Make a tear in the middle of each end and place a rubber band in on each side.
  7. Staple the rubber bands down.
  8. Unfold the mask, place rubber bands around your ears and fit the paper clip nose piece to your face.
